NAOHIRO UKAWA (DOMMUNE)
Naohiro Ukawa
“GODFATHER against The Difficult language”
Born in Kagawa Prefecture in 1968. Currently an artist. Since the late 1980s, he has been active in a wide range of fields, including as a video artist, graphic designer, VJ, writer, and university professor. Since participating in "Buzz Club: News from Japan" (MoMA PS1, New York) and "JAM: Tokyo-London" (Barbican Art Gallery, London) in 2001, he has presented his work at many exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. In 2010, he opened Japan's first live streaming studio and channel.
He personally launched the station "DOMMUNE". It attracted a lot of attention both in Japan and overseas with its record-breaking number of viewers, and was selected as a recommended work at the 2011 Japan Media Arts Festival organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Ukawa considers the act of filming, distributing, and recording the programs produced daily at the DOMMUNE studio to be his own "contemporary art works". In 2016, he opened a satellite studio "DOMMUNE LINZ!" with a 500m-wide stage in the train hall at Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), and in 2019, he opened a satellite studio "DOMMUNE SETOUCHI" at the Setouchi Triennale. Both of these were huge hits, and DOMMUNE has participated in numerous international contemporary art exhibitions, including in London, Dortmund, Stockholm, and more.
They have established satellite studios all over the world, including in Paris, Mumbai, Linz, Fukushima, Yamaguchi, Osaka, Kagawa, Kanazawa, Akita, Sapporo, Sado Island, and more, and continue to simultaneously explore the meaning of omnipresence (here and now) and omnipresence (anytime, anywhere). Over the past 10 years, they have streamed over 5,000 programs, 7,000 hours, and 150 terabytes of content, with a total audience of over 100 million. In 2019, they moved their studio to the newly renovated 9th floor of Shibuya PARCO. They have evolved into "SUPER DOMMUNE" and are aiming to become a global leader in the 5G and beyond.
We aim to update with an eye to the future using cutting-edge technology.
In 2021, he received the 71st Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for Arts.
