Matsuoka Ittetsu has produced photographic works that belong to the lineage of personal photography, capturing scenes of his wife Marie, or scenes in which her presence can be sensed, such as rooms and towns. He believes that the comprehensive concepts and word-based interpretations that permeate our selves are merely based on given definitions created by humans, and continues to attempt to reinterpret the world through the non-verbal medium of photography. The images, captured with the photographer's equal gaze to capture personal everyday scenes in a uniform manner, evoke familiar emotions in the viewer from the subject and the appearance of the town, while also evoking a mysterious sensation that seems to affirm the existence of all that appears there, inviting the viewer into a quietly yet powerful world of his work.
Matsuoka is interested in flattening images through color.
The works he photographed with the Olympus μ (Mu), which he has used for many years, have a uniform pale color tone and incorporate the blur and bokeh that are unique to analog, as well as a characteristic softness, to create a unique floating feeling.
True to the artist's words, "I capture hope as it is in my photographs," Matsuoka carefully captures the ever-changing landscapes that seem to unravel the rigidly formed world.
